Chapter 8 Compliance

What Is Chapter 8 ?

Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual deals with the safety of parties working on the road. Vehicles and equipment used in road inspection, maintenance and construction are implored to use highly reflective material, R3B material to alert oncoming road users of safety hazards nearby, especially when visibility is low at night and in bad weather conditions.

Who Does It Concern ?

New guidance relates to fleets operating and stopping on roads with speeds over 60 km/h. The reflectivity of the red now needs to be minimum R3B compliant or higher to meet the new standard and to ensure a higher level of safety is achieved.
Operating in Ireland?
R3B material-compliant rear markings are strongly recommended to meet standard guidelines of good practices.

Even if your fleet legally does not require Chapter 8 markings, your business may still want to ensure you meet code of practice. We highly recommend that you also move to the minimum of R3B compliant red reflective materials.

Chapter 8 Markings:

  1. Vehicles should be conspicuous in colour (e.g. white, yellow)
  2. The rear of the vehicle should have a highly visible marking of alternating strips of fluorescent non-reflective yellow and orange to red prismatic reflective strips.
  3. The rear of the vehicle should have a sign for temporary road maintenance while and vehicles that carry equipment or multiple personnel. The signs should state the work being carried out. (e.g. ROAD MAINTENANCE)
